Self Assessment:
First off this class was not what I had envisioned it to be. When seeing the name of the class I thought that we would work on creating a website but in the end what we ended up doing is learning the steps that are taken before actually launching a website. In this course we were able to create a web policy, make an inventory sheet of our current districts website, create a project charter and high level plan, and create a site launch plan according to Kaiser's checklist. This helped to get a better understanding of what is involved in any website design.
I am glad that I had the chance to learn all the behind scenes planning that takes place. In Shirley Kaiser’s book she points out the following fact. “Making time to undertake effective planning, ensuring rock-solid organization, and providing continuous attention to detail are vital steps if you’re to create and maintain a successful web site that allows visitors to focus on the real reason for their visit, rather than petty frustrations over the workings of your site.” (Kaiser, 2006, p. 2)
Learn as a Learner:
Our embedded assignment was to create a school World Wide Web policy. Creating this policy meant reviewing the current KISD Electronic Communication and Data Management Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Adding provisions for proper use of programs and applications that “encompass the growing collection of new and emerging Web-based tools,” (Solomon & Schrum, 2007) was also a requirement. The one assignment in this course that was a little difficult to complete because of misunderstanding and not quite knowing what was needed was the web site inventory spreadsheet. After attending the web conference and seeing examples made the assignment a lot clearer and understandable. I felt that after completing all the assignments, I had a clearer understanding of the steps that go into creating a web policy, breaking down the items that are included in a web site, and also the steps that one must go through to make sure that a site is ready to be launched.
Lifelong Learning Skills: In completing this assignment we accomplished standard six, the part of a technology leaders role in which the social, ethical, legal, and Human Issues are considered. It was noted in Iste’s book on the standards by the authors the following truth. “When new technologies are implemented in school environments, they trigger a host of social, ethical, legal and human issues.” (Williamson & Redish, 2009, p.123). As a technology leader I will probably get the experience of writing a policy that regulates student’s actions with web design and use. With collaboration being a necessary skill of the future, I will need guidelines to regulate this process. This must go beyond the already established AUP schools have the students and parents sign.
